Instant 6-Pack Abs!

Have you guys seen this product floating around the internet lately? I would almost believe it's real except for the use of language like "Pseudo-athlete" and "chicks dig it" which would never be used for a real product. It's funny though because I'm actually surprised something like this hasn't been invented and marketed yet. I mean, we have padded underwear to make our butts look more shapely, why not a plastic device that molds your fat into abdominal ripples? I bet it would make a fortune!

Gastric Bypass Surgery as a Cure for Diabetes?

I saw this piece on the news this morning essentially promoting gastric bypass surgery as a cure for type II diabetes. The irony about this report is that during the interview with the woman in the piece, she is shown...exercising!....and....eating salads! If you look at her physique in the before and after photos she is clearly more muscular too, so I would assume she is also doing some strength training.

Here's the thing I don't get: Perhaps the lifestyle changes associated with gastric bypass surgery ultimately led to the elimination of her diabetes, but it was the lifestyle changes (exercise and diet, including elimination or reduction in unhealthy foods) that cured her, not the surgery itself. I am completely dumbfounded that the International Diabetes Federation is considering recommending a dangerous surgery in lieu of diet changes. Granted, a surgery is easier in the minds of most patients. Essentially a one stop, cure all for what ails you. Why bother with diet and exercise...those are HARD, by golly. In my opinion, this isn't a good option as a cure for diabetes. There are much safer and less expensive methods, though they may take more time and effort.

Anything Can Be

As some of you know, I am getting ready to make my move to Austin, Texas. This has been a difficult decision and especially lately, it seems the universe has been throwing obstacles in my path. I am not deterred, but it does occasionally make me wonder if I am making the right decision.

Yesterday, I was going through my bookshelf, weeding out unnecessary items I don't wish to pack.  I have a few Shel Silverstein books from my childhood and as I picked one up, I thought, I really don't need this, I'm never going to read it again though it carries fond memories for me.  I opened up A Light in the Attic to a random page and the first poem I saw was this:

“Listen to the mustn'ts, child.
Listen to the don'ts.
Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts.
Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me...
Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”

It was just what I needed to see at a time when I am facing a lot of doubt and fear. Anything can happen, and I look forward to the new opportunities this move will bring me. Needless to say, I kept the book.

Welcome to the Become Amazing Blog!

I look forward to sharing posts with you on the subjects of health and wellness and how to get your life in tip-top shape!

My views are slightly controversial from the mainstream. I believe in health from a holistic perspective. I believe that everyone needs a little help reaching their goals and you should never be afraid to ask for it. I also believe bacon is tasty and part of a well balanced diet.

It won't all be preaching and statistics though, I promise you'll be entertained as well!
Let the posting begin!
